2020 Open Day Cancelled

Saturday 14 March 2020

Ipswich Girls' and Junior Grammar School

The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) met in Sydney today.  The current Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation was discussed.

The School received news at 2:20pm today that the Prime Minister had announced that non-essential events with gatherings of 500 people or more should be cancelled from Monday 16 March 2020.

Open Day is the School’s annual showcase event, however, it could be considered a non-essential event.  Well over one thousand people would have gathered on our campus over a three-hour period on Saturday.

The School has a responsibility to its School community and a social responsibility to the wider community.  As a result of the Prime Minister’s announcement, I regret to inform you that the School’s 2020 Open Day scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled.

The Prime Minister also said that the announcement did not include schools or university lectures.  Consequently, our School will be open on Monday for normal lessons.

I would like to acknowledge our amazing students for all the work they did to prepare for Open Day.  They are always the highlight of Open Day.  Thank-you also to our committed staff for marketing, preparing displays and ensuring our campus would shine even more brightly on the day.  Thank-you also to the many Old Girls and parents and friends who had also prepared displays and activities.  Open Day is a team event and our School has a great team.

The School will now reach out to the registered families to make alternative arrangements.   Similarly, the School will investigate the possibility of an alternate Open Day date.

Yours sincerely
