Sport
At Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School, we encourage all our girls to take part in individual and team sports to balance their academic lives and to learn life skills like leadership, responsibility and accountability.
Our sports activities promote health and fitness and instil a sense of School pride, sportsmanship and team spirit. Through our co-curricular sports program, IGGS girls have been selected for district, state and international sporting events. Professional coaches and staff coach training and skill development.
As a proud member of the Queensland Girls Secondary School Sports Association (QGSSSA) since 1911, IGGS students have access to Queensland’s premier interschool sporting competition for young women.
QGSSSA aims to “promote friendly spirit between schools and at the same time deepen and strengthen the loyalty of individual girls to their own school.”
Girls selected to represent the School in QGSSSA competitions have all training, insurance, registration and transport included in their school fees.

Interhouse Sport
All Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School students are allocated to a House Group, which provides an important connection for students across different year levels. Annual interhouse carnivals are held throughout the year in swimming, athletics and cross country. IGGS has five Houses named after former headmistresses: Armitage, Carter, Connell, Hunt and White.
Sporting Facilities
Complementing our extensive co-curriculum program are a range of facilities to cater to our girls training needs and interests.
Our purpose built, multi-court gymnasium with international standard ceiling height is used extensively for Physical Education classes, training and competitive matches, with a dedicated mezzanine viewing area for supporters.
Our Fitness Centre and Human Movement Laboratory features the latest gymnasium equipment and an Indoor Cycling room. The Athletics Oval includes a running track, Long Jump pit, Discus and Shot Put circles, as well as training areas for Javelin and High Jump.
Additional local facilities the students have access to include: a full-size athletics track and field, cricket pitch, hockey and touch football field as well as our onsite five-lane, 25 metre heated pool which is used for squad training and swimming lessons.
For tennis, netball and volleyball playing students who compete on different surfaces and at various times, the School has plexi-pave tennis courts (with lights) and a synthetic grass volleyball court. Girls also benefit from experienced, well-qualified coaches, with a number of elite athletes choosing to attend IGGS to further their talent and potential in their chosen support.
