Co-Curricular Arts

Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School offers an array of Co-Curricular Arts programs to our creative students who are interested in extending their love of the Performing Arts beyond the classroom. These programs include instrumental ensembles, choirs, drama clubs, Theatresports groups and Dance Troupes. Catering for all levels of student ability, the Co-Curricular Arts Program aims to enhance and further develop the student’s confidence, dedication and their ability to work as part of a creative team with like-minded peers. Students commit to these programs throughout the year, attending weekly rehearsals and performing on both the School stage and that of the wider community.

Students at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School are also given the opportunity to undertake private instrumental, vocal and Speech & Drama tuition. We currently offer private instrumental tuition for the violin, viola, cello, double bass, bassoon, oboe, piano, voice, saxophone, clarinet, flute, guitar, drums/percussion, trumpet, trombone, French horn, baritone horn and tuba. Students work with experienced professionals to develop their skills and many have gone on to achieve outstanding results both during their time at the School and into the profession.

IGGS Co-Curricular Arts Programs:

Cadenza Flute Choir

This is an ensemble for our intermediate to advanced flute students in years 7 – 12 who enjoy extending their ensemble experience to the chamber music genre. The Cadenza Flute Choir rehearses weekly with an experienced Ensemble Director and Flute Specialist Instructor, developing both technical and musical skills whilst working within a musical team. Students both modern and more traditional repertoire and participate in performances for the School and wider community. This ensemble also prepares for competitive performances throughout the year and entry is via audition.

Clarinet Ensemble

This is an ensemble for our intermediate to advanced clarinet and bass clarinet students in years 7 – 12 who wish to extend their ensemble experience to the chamber music genre. The Clarinet Ensemble rehearses weekly with an experienced Ensemble Director and Woodwind Specialist Instructor, developing both technical and musical skills whilst working within a musical team. Students study both modern and more traditional repertoire and participate in performances for the School and wider community. This ensemble also prepares for competitive performances throughout the year.

Saxophone Ensemble

This is an ensemble for our intermediate to advanced saxophone students in years 7 – 12 who wish to extend their ensemble experience to the chamber music genre. The Saxophone Ensemble rehearses weekly with an experienced Ensemble Director and Woodwind Specialist Instructor, developing both technical and musical skills whilst working within a musical team. Students study both modern and traditional repertoire and participate in performances for the School and wider community. This ensemble also prepares for competitive performances throughout the year.

Con Brio Ensemble

The IGGS Con Brio Ensemble is our most advanced band, involving students from years 7 – 12 who are of an high level of performance in either woodwind, percussion, brass or keyboard disciplines. This groups enjoys working closely each week with an experienced Ensemble Director, learning both contemporary and classical repertoire and honing their technical and musical ensemble skills. The IGGS Con Brio Ensemble represents the School at both competitive and non-competitive performances for the wider community and enjoys performing for special school events throughout the year.

Fanfare Band

The IGGS Fanfare Band involves students from years 7 – 9 who are of an intermediate level of performance in either woodwind, percussion, brass or keyboard disciplines, and is a stepping-stone to the more advanced, Con Brio Ensemble. This groups enjoys working closely each week with an experienced Ensemble Director, learning both contemporary and classical repertoire and honing their technical and musical ensemble skills. The IGGS Fanfare Band represents the School at both competitive and non-competitive performances for the wider community and enjoys performing for special school events throughout the year.

Bella Voce Choir

The IGGS Bella Voce choir is a non-auditioned choir involving students from years 7 – 12 who simply love to sing. Students do not need to have any prior choir experience. The purpose of this choir is to give our students the chance to enjoy exploring songs and their love of singing with other like-minded peers. The choir rehearses weekly with an experienced Choir Director, working on both modern and traditional choir repertoire. The IGGS Bella Voce Choir takes part in special school events such as ANZAC Day, Open Day and IGGS Showcase concerts, as well as performing and competing in the wider community.

Sorella Choir

The IGGS Sorella Choir is an auditioned choir and involves our most advanced vocalists from years 7 – 12 at IGGS who wish to extend their vocal technique and choir skills. The IGGS Sorella Choir represents the School at formal events, competitions, and performances for the school and wider community. Choir members work on advanced repertoire covering genres such as jazz, pop, classical and traditional. They rehearse once a week with an experienced Choir Director.

Vivo Strings Ensemble

The IGGS Vivo Strings Ensemble is the most advanced string ensemble at our school, made up of students who are of an intermediate to exceptional standard. This group works on both contemporary and classical repertoire, which extends the students technique and ensemble performance skills. Students from Years 7 – 10 who study the violin, viola, cello, double bass, electric bass, piano or drum kit are invited to audition for this ensemble. The ensemble rehearses weekly with an experienced String Specialist and enjoys performing for prestigious events both within the school and wider community also representing the school annually at a competitive level.

IGGS/IGS Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra involves the most advanced string, woodwind, brass and percussion students from Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School and Ipswich Grammar School. Students in the orchestra enjoy collaborative work across both school campuses and work together in preparation for community competitive and non-competitive events in Ipswich. The Symphony Orchestra rehearses once a week working on advanced classical and contemporary symphonic repertoire with experienced conductors. They enjoy taking part in the annual IGS and IGGS performance calendars. Entry into this ensemble is by audition.

Dance Troupe

Each year, our School and Gold Coast dance company, Ikin Dance, collaborate to produce a dance program that is fun, welcoming and allows students to explore this performance genre whether they have had prior experience or not. Students involved in this Troupe are from years 7 – 9 and entry is via audition. Our students enjoy both competitive and non-competitive performances across South-East Queensland, and take part in community, fund-raising and school performances.

Senior Dance Troupe

Like the IGGS Dance Troupe, the IGGS Senior Dance Troupe is part of a collaborative dance program between our school and Gold Coast dance company, Ikin Dance. Students in the IGGS Senior Dance Troupe are our most advanced dance students from years 10 – 12. Entry into the Senior Dance Troupe is via audition and only the best dance students in the school are accepted. Students enjoy performing at school and for various community events across South-East Queensland. They take part in specialist workshops, learning different dance genres from some of the industries leading dance professionals.
